I agree, Sam is a remarkable and quite articulate young man. I just heard him on the Coexisting with Nonhuman Animals podcast; he was impressive. I hope he is representative of some of the upcoming young vegan adovcates.

Thank-you for this post. I have been listening to Sam's podcasts and I am very impressed with this bright, well-spoken young man. He gives me hope for the future of the world.

Robert:
Thank you for the comment. Sam is truly a unique individual and I am grateful to you for writing the book that opened his eyes. I would suggest Rain Without Thunder by Gary Francione for an updated look at animal rights that might change your mind about going vegan if you are interested. In any case, I will be sure to check out the book you wrote that pulled Sam into activism. Thanks again, Robert.

I picked up this blog post because I have a Google Alert set for my name.

I'm not vegetarian myself, though I am strict about eating meat that raised with high welfare standards. Partly this came from reading Peter Singer's book Animal Liberation when I was about 14 years old, and subsequently it was reinforced by the the research I did when I wrote Man vs Beast back in 2004.

The e-mails I've had from people about this book are really interesting, including many kids who've turned veggie as a result, the odd mildly peeved parent who now has to make separate meals for veggie kids, and a couple who accuse me of cramming my agenda down their kids throats disguised as an adventure story (which is factually plain wrong because I eat meat!).

I always try and write books that are thought provoking without being preachy and it's really interesting that my book set Sam Tucker off on a path to becoming an activist. Good luck to him!
