Protect Your Pets on the 4th!

Every year, animals are lost, frightened, and killed over the 4th of July weekend. I once found a precious little puppy wandering a busy street, either abandoned or lost; luckily, despite no one responding to our “lost” ad, he was given a good home following that traumatic weekend. The following are suggestions to keep your companion animals safe during the holiday weekend.  Please be aware that even confined animals may bolt when fireworks are being let off, so if at all possible, keep them indoors for the duration.  Remove any items they may chew and make certain they will be comfortable during any firework demonstrations.

Precautions:

Do not take your pets with you to fireworks demonstrations; do NOT leave any animals locked in a car EVER. The hot interior of an auto can be lethal in short order; if the window is left partially open, your pet may escape or be stolen. Leave them home please.

Alcohol is poisonous to pets, so make certain all wine, beer, and spirits are kept safely out of their reach.

Avoid giving barbecued food and snack items to your pet. Stick with your pet’s normal diet—any change, even for a day, can result in stomach upset. Certain foods like onions, avocado, chocolate, grapes and raisins are toxic for animals

Keep suncreen and insect repellent out of reach of all pets.

Watch out for pets near water; pools contain chemicals which can be toxic to your pets.

Enjoy your holiday!

As always, if you suspect your pet has ingested something poisonous from the barbecue, please contact your vet or the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center at (888) 426-4435. While we celebrate our freedom, let us not forget those in our care. If you are an animal guardian, help them have a safe, quiet holiday too! Happy 4th!
